Veterans Health Initiative (VHI)
The Veterans Health Initiative (VHI) is an Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards program which offers courses to help health providers care for their veteran patients. The resources are developed to recognize the connection between certain health effects and military service, facilitate better documentation of military medical history and prepare health care providers to better serve their veteran patients; when reading for general information or reference, (and not for obtaining medical licensure hours,) click on "Link to PDF" beneath an icon image toward the bottom of the page.

Soldiers and families in need of crisis assistance can contact Military OneSource or the Defense Center of Excellence (DCOE) for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Outreach Center. Trained consultants are available from both organizations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

NYS Council on Returning Veterans and their Families
The Council is charged with developing recommendations for a comprehensive state Strategy to accomplish the following:
Increase public awareness of the needs of returning veterans and their families and the value that veterans offer to communities as a result of their service;
Conduct education and outreach to ensure that veterans and their families are aware of available resources and services to help address physical health and mental health and substance abuse problems resulting from active duty;
Properly identify veterans and their families to ensure that they are aware of and have access to available benefits and services;
Identify and eliminate barriers to the prompt and accurate diagnosis of physical disabilities, medical conditions, mental illnesses and/or substance abuse disorders affecting returning veterans and their families;
